1. Who we are
Markdown Editor: MD Viewer ("the app") is developed and published on Google Play by VELOX APP LTD ("we", "us"), a company registered in England and Wales under company number 17186614, with its registered office at 128 City Road, London, EC1V 2NX, United Kingdom.
This policy covers the Markdown Editor: MD Viewer Android app only. Our company privacy policy covers this website and emails you send us. For any privacy question, contact [email protected].
2. Summary
- The app has no account or sign-in, and we run no servers for it.
- The documents you open are read and saved only on your device, or through the storage app you chose. We never upload them and cannot see them.
- The app sends anonymous usage statistics and crash reports (Google Firebase) that never include your documents, file names or text. They are on by default and you can switch them off any time in Settings › Privacy. See section 6.
- The free version shows ads: a banner on the home screen and an optional ad you can watch to export one more PDF. They are served by Unity LevelPlay and its ad networks, which may use your advertising ID. Where the law requires it, you are asked for consent first. Pro removes all ads.
- We do not sell your data or share it with anyone for their own purposes.
- The optional Pro purchase is handled entirely by Google Play.
3. Your documents
You open files with Android's own file picker, by choosing a folder, or with "Open with" from another app. Android then gives the app access to the files or folder you chose only. The app does not ask for permission to read your storage, and it cannot see your other files.
The app reads the file and saves your changes back to the same file, on your device or through the storage app that holds it (for example the Google Drive app, which then handles it under its own terms). Text you paste into the app stays on your device until you save it. Your documents and their contents are never sent to us, to the ad networks or to anyone else.
When you export a document as PDF or HTML, or share it, the file goes only where you choose to save or send it.
4. What the app keeps on your device
- the list of recent files and folders you opened (their names and the access Android gave the app), so you can reopen them;
- your settings, such as theme, font size and whether to load images from the web;
- a draft of the text you are editing, so a crash or a flat battery does not lose your work;
- up to 10 earlier versions of each file you edit, so you can restore one.
All of this is kept in the app's private storage, which Android protects from other apps. You can clear the recent list, drafts and earlier versions at any time in Settings › Clear recents and versions, or remove a single item from the recent list.
If Android backup is turned on for your Google account, Android may include the app's settings and the recent files and folders list (names and links only, not the contents) in your backup, so they come back on a new phone. Drafts and earlier versions are never included in backups.
5. Ads in the free version (Unity LevelPlay)
The free version of the app shows ads. If you buy Pro, the app shows no ads and does not start the ad software at all. Ads appear in two places only: a banner at the bottom of the home screen, and an optional rewarded video that you can choose to watch when you have used your free PDF exports, to export one more PDF. No ad appears while you read or edit a document, and there are no full-screen ads shown on their own.
Ads are served through Unity LevelPlay, an ad mediation service from Unity, which asks several ad networks (for example Unity Ads, ironSource Ads, AppLovin, Meta Audience Network, Mintegral, Pangle, Liftoff, InMobi, Chartboost and Google AdMob) for an ad. These companies act as independent controllers for the data they collect. When an ad is requested they may receive and process: your advertising ID, your IP address and the approximate location derived from it, device and OS details (model, Android version, language, screen, network type), the app name and version, and how you interact with ads (shown, clicked, completed) and diagnostics. They use it to choose and show ads, measure and limit how often ads appear, prevent fraud, and, where you allow it, to personalise ads. The content and names of your documents are never shared with them, and the app never asks for your precise location.
Your choices. In the European Economic Area, the UK and some other regions (including some US states) the app asks for your consent through Google's consent form (Google User Messaging Platform) before any ad is requested; if you do not consent, ads are not personalised or not requested, as the form allows. You can change your answer at any time in Settings › Privacy options (shown where the law requires the option). You can also reset or delete your advertising ID in Android's settings (Privacy › Ads), and the ad networks' own privacy policies describe their controls. Buying Pro removes the ads, and the app then no longer requests ads or collects ad data. The app is not directed at children and does not mark itself as child-directed for ads.
6. Usage statistics and crash reports (Google Firebase)
To see whether the app works and how it is used, the app can use Google Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics, provided by Google. This is on by default and you can switch it off at any time with the switch "Share anonymous usage data and crash reports" in Settings › Privacy. When it is off, the app does not send usage events or crash reports to Google.
While it is on, the app sends:
- a random app-installation identifier (not your name, email or advertising ID) and your device model, Android version, app version and language;
- your approximate location (country or city, derived from the IP address, which Google does not store with the events);
- simple usage events: that a document was opened (and whether from the picker, a recent, a folder or another app, whether it is Markdown or plain text, and a coarse size category such as small, medium or large), that you edited, saved or exported (PDF or HTML), that the Pro screen was shown, and that you tapped a contact button;
- crash and error reports, with technical details of the device and of what the app was doing when it failed.
These events never contain the content, name or location of your documents, folders or anything you typed. We use them only to find problems and to understand which features are used. We do not use them for advertising, do not combine them with ad data from Unity LevelPlay and its ad networks, and do not sell them. The app does not use your advertising ID for this.
While it is on, the app also asks Firebase Remote Config for our current support contact details (see section 9). That request sends your installation identifier and IP address to Google. If you switch it off, the app uses the contact details built into it and makes no such request.
Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in keeping the app working, fixing crashes and understanding which features are used so we can improve it. The data is anonymous and limited to what is listed above, so we consider the impact on you low. You can object and opt out at any time with the switch "Share anonymous usage data and crash reports" in Settings › Privacy. When you switch it off, the app stops sending, discards crash reports that were not sent yet and resets its random identifier on your device. Data sent before is not affected; Google keeps individual event data for 2 months and crash reports for 90 days (see below).
Google processes this data for us under its Firebase privacy information and data processing terms. It may be processed outside the UK, the EEA and Switzerland, including in the United States, under the safeguards in those terms (such as standard contractual clauses and the UK addendum). Google keeps individual event data for 2 months and crash reports for 90 days, and then deletes them. Reports that Google aggregates do not identify you.
7. Purchases
Markdown Editor: MD Viewer Pro is an optional one-time in-app purchase made through Google Play Billing. Google processes the payment and your Google account details under the Google Privacy Policy. We never receive your payment card details.
The app asks Google Play whether you own Pro, confirms a new purchase with Google Play, and saves a single yes/no value on your device so Pro works offline. It also counts on your device how many free PDF exports you have used. The app learns only whether you own Pro.
Google gives us order records for sales in Google Play Console, such as the order number, date, product, price and country. We use these only for accounting, refunds and our legal obligations, and keep them for as long as UK law requires financial records to be kept (usually 6 years).
8. Images from the web
Documents are shown fully offline. Only if a document links to an image on the internet and "Load images from the web" is turned on in Settings, your device downloads that image directly from the website that hosts it. That website sees your IP address, as with any web request, and its own privacy policy applies. We are not involved in that request. Links you tap in a document open in your web browser.
9. Contacting us from the app
The app has buttons to contact us by WhatsApp (+447700183931) or by email ([email protected]). They do nothing until you tap one. The button then opens WhatsApp or your own email app with a pre-filled message that includes the app version, your device model, your Android version and whether you have Pro, so we can help you faster. You can edit the message before you send it, and nothing reaches us unless you send it.
Chats on WhatsApp are also covered by WhatsApp's (Meta's) privacy policy, and emails by your email provider's policy. We use your messages only to answer you, as described in our company privacy policy.
10. Information from Google Play
Like every app developer on Google Play, we can see statistics that Google provides in Google Play Console, such as the number of installs and, if you have chosen to share usage and diagnostics data with Google, crash and performance reports. Google collects this data under the Google Privacy Policy. The statistics are aggregated or do not identify you to us, and we use them only to fix problems and improve the app.
The app may occasionally show Google Play's in-app review card, and remembers on your device when it last did. A rating or review you leave there is handled by Google Play. The app also asks Google Play whether a newer version is available, so it can offer you the update.
11. Permissions
The app does not request access to your storage, photos, camera, microphone, location, contacts or phone. It uses the internet and network-state permissions for ads, for web images (when you turn them on) and, while usage statistics and crash reports are on, for them, the Google Play Billing permission for purchases, and the advertising ID permission (and Android's ad-services permissions) that Unity LevelPlay and its ad networks need.
12. Deleting your data
- Recent list, drafts and earlier versions: Settings › Clear recents and versions. Your files themselves are not changed.
- Everything on your phone: uninstall the app, or go to Android Settings › Apps › Markdown Editor: MD Viewer › Storage › Clear storage.
- Usage statistics and crash reports: switch off "Share anonymous usage data and crash reports" in Settings › Privacy. The app then stops sending and resets its identifier; Google deletes what was already sent after the periods in section 6.
- Ad data: reset or delete your advertising ID in Android's settings, and change your ad consent in Settings › Privacy options. Data collected by Unity LevelPlay and its ad networks is managed by them under their own privacy policies.
- Purchases: your Pro purchase is recorded by Google against your Google account, so you can restore it on a new phone. The order records we receive are kept as described in section 7.
We hold no account, document or usage data of yours. If you have a question about your data, or about an order, email [email protected].
13. Security
Everything the app saves is kept in its private storage on your device, which Android protects from other apps. Connections to the ad networks, Firebase and Google Play are encrypted, and the app does not allow unencrypted (http) connections.
14. Children
The app is not directed at children under 16. It does not knowingly collect personal data from children, and the usage statistics in section 6 are anonymous and can be switched off in Settings.
15. Your rights
Under UK GDPR, EU GDPR and the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection, you have the right to access, correct or delete personal data we hold about you, to restrict or object to its processing, to receive it in a portable format, and to object to the usage statistics and crash reports at any time by switching them off (section 6). Email [email protected] and we will respond within one month.
The usage and crash data in section 6 is tied only to a random identifier, so we cannot tell which data is yours from your name or email. Nothing more is collected once you switch it off, and what was collected is deleted automatically after the periods in section 6. If you ask us to delete data already collected, we may need extra information to find it.
You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk), to the data protection authority in your EEA country (list of authorities), or in Switzerland to the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (edoeb.admin.ch).
16. Changes to this policy
If the app's handling of data changes, we will update this policy and its effective date before releasing that version of the app.
